The world's biggest hole is located in Russia.

The gaint hole is actually a diamond mine in Eastern Siberia near the town Mirna.  It is 525 meters deep and 1.25 km in the diameter.

The following truck loader is one of the biggest in the world - lenth 13.36 meters, width 7.78 meters and height 6.65 meters.

This gaint machine appears just a small point in the next image…

The suction above the hole resulted in several helicopter crashes, so all flight above the hole is prohibited now.

A view from a satellite…

  3. Dude, your hole is TINY. Check out http://www.kennecott.com/about_facts.html for the specs on the Bingham Copper Mine in Utah, United States. It’s over 3/4 miles deep, or as deep as this mine is wide. Also, the trucks are bigger (only slightly), at over 23 feet tall instead of 21 feet tall (it doesn’t list the other dimensions). At breadth, it is 2.5 miles instead of .75 miles. Yay Kennecott! It is not just a hole, but literally they have mined a mountain away.

  33. Well, the russians may be very proud of this hole. What did they do with all the dirt? The russians may well lay claim to having dug the deepest hole on earth, on the Kola Penninsula, over 12 km deep.

But the record for the biggest hole remains with the americans–the Kennecott copper mine in Utah. I have seen it, and it is only a little bigger than this hole. The russians could eventually pass it up.

On the pictures of the russian hole you can tell it is a hole, they started digging from ground zero..

…. IT IS NOT A HOLE it is “currently the largest open-pit mine in the world”

    Comment by beholder — July 31, 2006 @ 1:19 am

  39. If this diamond mine is a hole then Kennecott Copper Mine is a hole. I would not be the least bit surprised to learn explosives were used in digging the diamond mine, either. It isn’t like Kennecott Copper dug their hole all at once, with a single blast. They have been working on it for one hundred years. (Digging began in 1906). How long have the russians been digging their hole?

Facts are facts. The russians have the largest country in the world–even after big chunks broke off. They have the deepest hole. They have more beautiful spacecraft than the americans have. Greater natural resources. This is probably the biggest open pit diamond mine in the world. But if this is a hole, it is not yet as big as the Bingham Canyon Mine, and unless they are willing to destroy the surrounding city (as Kennecott did to the town of Bingham), it may never grow that big.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bingham_Canyon

The Merny Hole could fit inside the american’s hole with plenty of room to spare. Maybe they have not been working on it as long–they apparently only started in earnest in 1955. Their mine is now abandoned, whereas the Kennecott people will keep working their pit at least another seven years.

What I think is that this pit is a remarkable achievement, considering it is nearly as big a the american pit, but less than half as old, and it was dug way up north, just below the arctic circle. No way the americans could have ever dug such a big hole so far north in such little time.

  40. Great Story

    Comment by PreZ — July 31, 2006 @ 11:51 pm

  41. the big difference in the two holes/pits is that diamonds are mined in a cone to reach the diamond in the deep pressures of the earth and copper is across a vast area. Also the elevation of the two hole could be vastly different. Meaning the Kennecott hole/pit could be at 13,000ft. and the Mirna hole at 17ft. making one of the two the deepest hole/pit. But the article does say “BIGGEST HOLE” I would have to reluctantly go with the Kennecott hole/pit, because the true definition of a hole is “A hollowed place in something solid; a cavity or pit.”
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hole

As it goes for opinion I find the Mirna hole much more impressive to look at, but that is just my opinion.

    Comment by adios — August 8, 2006 @ 9:17 pm

  42. That somehow pathetic… russians and americans fighting about who’s got the biggest hole! lol

By the way, neither the diamond mine in Russia, nor the Copper Mine in Utah is the biggest hole, but the world famous CHUQUICAMATA Mine in Chile, you ignorant asswipes! :-P

By The way, you should define your meassures more accurate. Do you mean deep or by Volume? If its the first case, again a rusian hole is a deepest in the world (14k), if its about volume, its the Chilean copper mine Chuqui.

    Comment by Lucybell78 — August 15, 2006 @ 2:42 am

  43. the mine in kennecott looks to me like a valley, not a pit nor a hole. i have to say i think Mirna takes this one.

  44. “No way the americans could have ever dug such a big hole so far north in such little time.” –pasha582

Because the Russians have better Japanese digging equipment than the Americans, right?

And aren’t they both “open pit” mines, scraping away layers of earth to get at the precious material? I don’t see what all the fuss about with the competition… it’s just pathetic.

  45. I might’ve found a bigger, similar hole.
Look on GoogleEarth or similar, right near:
    N 66 26 42
    E 112 19 48

The hole appears to be about 1.75 KM by 1.2 KM wide (slightly oval in shape), with an unknown depth.

    Comment by tooloney — September 26, 2006 @ 6:43 pm

  47. Just look at this thing. It is clearly a hole. These other mines, yes, bigger ones, are basically just a few perimeter layers away from being strip mining operations. THEY ARE NOT HOLES!!
Man-made canyons, yes. The key distinction with the Mirna hole is that the geometrical properties of it are clearly unique from the other mining anomalies out there. With the others, one can easily see where the alleged hole bottoms out. With this one in question, it is a tightly formed circular cone penetrating into the depths of the earth.
Think about it. Perhaps review your wife/girlfriend/favorite local hooker or pornographic magazine for a refresher course on anatomy, then answer me this; Which geographical structure reminds you more of what different portion of the female anotomy, and out of the potential list of choices, which ones can you more freely refer to as “holes”. (I am presenting this question as a point of rhetoric, however, if you persist on the idiot’s way out, i.e. turning a blind eye to the obvious, embracing ignorance, etc., then go explore the topological significance of this comparison.)

  50. Having Been to both mines,, I find the Mirny mine more impressive,, Maybe because the terain is so flat and the mine is so close to town. Also the waste ore is not seen as much. I am an American , and I was in Mirny when they celabrated the “completion of thier task”. Anywhere else there would only have been sorry for closing down the mine. My hats off to my Russian freinds in Mirny, they have great hearts and are proud people.

    Comment by Boyd B — September 30, 2006 @ 5:06 pm

  51. That’s not a hole … This is a hole

The ultimate open pit mine is expected to be about 1200 metres deep with the dimensions of the pit at the surface being about 3.5 by 4.5 kilometres. The initial “Starter Pit” will be about 450 metres deep and have a diameter at the surface of about 1.7 kilometres. The Starter Pit is larger than final size of most existing open pit mines in Australia.
